Guide to Live Classroom for students

Live Classroom is a tool which can be used for "virtual classes with real-time voice and video streaming". Students and the lecturer can converse as in a face-to-face situation. Students can also use Live Classroom for group discussions/interactions.

To access a Live Classroom:

- click the link on your unit's Home Page
- click Enter this Room

The Live Classroom screen contains 4 areas (see below):

  • Content frame or eBoard
  • Media bar
  • Text chat frame
  • Participant frame
  • Branding frame

Powerpoint slides, graphic files, web sites, or questions – multiple choice, open-ended or questionnaire are displayed in the Content Frame or eBoard. The facilitator/presenter controls the display of content.

To speak
     Either press Ctrl key or hold Talk button
When you finish talking release the Ctrl key or Talk button

Text can be typed in the box on the bottom line. Press Return/Enter key to send the text. All the text chat is displayed in the large box above the text entry box.

All participants are listed in the Participants Frame. A plus "+" below the privilege indicators Participant icon shows if you can use audio, video and chat.

Click hand raise Hand raise to speak when you want to speak. The facilitator will ask you to speak when it is your turn.

Click the poll buttons Buttons for polling when the facilitator asks a question needing a Yes/No response.

If you have a webcam click the Webcam icon icon. When you are speaking a streaming video broadcast will be available for other participants.

If other participants have a webcam a small window will display the streaming video as the person is talking.

 
Technical Requirements

Items to check before your first Live Classroom session:

  • computer requirements:
         - Win 98 SE+, Mac OSX 10.2 + or Linux
         - 128 MB Ram (256 MB recommended)
         - Internet access
         - soundcard with microphone and speakers
  • have a headset/mic combo. – better than using in-built microphone and speakers
  • run the Live Classroom setup wizard to ensure your computer is ready.

Click Volume iconto adjust the volume for the microphone and speakers.

Phone access
If you are unable to use the microphone or speakers on your computer or will not be near a computer you can participate (speak and listen) in a Live Classroom session by using the phone connection. Click the link to Live Classroom in your online unit. The phone number and PIN code, which you can use, are displayed.
