Go online

As a Unit Coordinator you have day-to-day control over your units. You provide learning activities and content appropriate for your students and the objectives of the unit and you manage the progress of students in the unit.

To help with the development of your unit, the LMS Support Team provides a unit template, advice, training and administrative support. ITS (Information Technology Services) maintains system support for the LMS.

The steps for placing a unit online are:

Step 1

Unit Coordinator
  • Enters a request for an online unit
     -
selects the link to Online Unit Request System from the Teaching & Learning tab in the Staff Portal
  • Enters their Murdoch number and password and will be asked to enter the following data:
     -
    unit code
     -
whether they want a new unit or a unit based on an existing unit and the code for that unit
     -
the group(s) of students who will access the unit
     -
coordinator name - if it is different from the previous teaching period or they are requesting the unit on behalf of the coordinator
     -
the date the unit is to be activated if it is different from a week before the start of the teaching period. Units are activated - made available to students a week before the start of semester
Enters the name(s) of additional designer(s), instructor(s) and auditor(s) in the Comment box

LMS
  • provides a unit template
  • assigns the coordinator(s) designer and instructor access
  • advises coordinators how to access the online unit

Step 2

Unit Coordinator
  • may attend workshops offered by LMS. (Recommended if you are new to using the LMS)

Step 3

Unit Coordinator
  • becomes familiar with the Guide for Unit Quality Materials which contains information and checklists which assist in unit design (print and online)
  • designs the online components of the unit to make best use of the online medium and LMS tools
  • either
     -
develops the online unit themselves; or
     -
uses Production Services to develop the unit

Step 4

Unit Coordinator
  • ensures copyright requirements regarding reproduction of text, graphics and other intellectual property are met. No material is to be placed on a web page without the written permission of the copyright owner and records of permission should be filed. Pictures or videos of people should not be placed on web pages without the person's permission. Third party content (eg journal articles) should be placed on e-reserve and linked from within the unit. See Murdoch's Copyright Policy
  • audio and video files should be stored in the Lectopia system. Links to the audio and video can be added from the online unit.
  • completes the following section in Coordinator and Contacts page in Unit Information:
Originally written by (insert name), (insert date)
Revised by (insert name), (insert date)
  • sets the due date(s) for quizzes and assignment submission outside the time slot 3pm to 12 midnight on a Thursday.

The LMS is likely to require ongoing occasional scheduled downtime for systems upgrades and maintenance. The LMS Team are reserving the time slot from 3pm to 12 midnight on Thursday as a systems maintenance window.

Step 5

Unit Coordinator
  • informs students how to access and study their online unit
     -
directs them to the Student Help site

Step 6

LMS
  • arranges for the unit to be 'activated'. Student data will be automatically added and the unit will be available to students enrolled in the unit

Step 7

Unit Coordinator
  • leaves all content – Unit Information and Learning Guide, lecture materials, assessment activities, discussion topics and student data in the unit so that it can be backed up after the end of the teaching period. Any teaching material stored within a unit on the learning management system is University property. Copyright of teaching materials is vested in the University as per section 3.1 of the Intellectual Property regulations at http://www.murdoch.edu.au/admin/legsln/regs/intellectualprop.html

Activation of units is normally done two working days before the start of the teaching period.

Once your unit is online you will need to:

1. Follow the steps in Administer your unit to ensure:

  • other staff can access the unit as necessary
  • all students can access the unit
  • preparation is done for rerunning the unit in the next teaching period

2. Review the content and design in light of use and feedback.

3. Keep up to date via the LMS mailing list.

4. Review the life cycle of a unit on the LMS for the steps needed to manage a unit.

Contact lms@murdoch.edu.au if there are any changes to staff accessing the unit, any problems with the unit or assistance is needed with using the learning management system and its tools.
